SHORT SPELLING OF THE CARDS

In the remainder of this minibridge course we will show the cards of the 4 players in a shortened way. This way you get used to the way playing cards are usually shown in bridge books.

FOLLOW SUITS

We already know how to take tricks with one suit! What happens if we play with multiple suits?

TRICK 1: West lead and chooses ♥J.

In the table you can see the 1st trick.

• West leads with ♥J.
• North play ♥Q.
• East plays ♥A.
• South must play ♥K reluctantly .

South would rather play ♠5 and save ♥K for another trick, but this is not allowed!

If you can, you must FOLLOW THE SUIT of the leader!

South MUST follow suit and is obliged to play ♥K.
Otherwise, if you cannot follow the suit, you may discard any card you like. A discard cannot win the trick, however high the card chosen.
This trick goes to East with ♥A.

TRICK 2:

What happens in trick 2?

• East (winner of the previous trick) may lead and chooses ♥3.
• South cannot follow suit of hearts and is allowed to play ♠5.
• West must follw suit and plays ♥10.
• North must follow suit and plays ♥7
• West wins the trick with ♥10.

TRICK 3: the decision!

• West (winner of previous trick) lead with ♠6.
• North cannot follow suit and plays ♥9.
• East cannot follow suit and plays ♥6.
• South must follow suit and wins the trick with ♠7.

The EW-team has 2 tricks: trick 1 by East and trick 2 by West.
The NS-team wins 1 trick thanks to South with trick 3.

Als al de spelers kleur bekennen, dan wint de hoogste kaart. Bestaat de slag uit meerdere kleuren, dan geldt onderstaande regel. If all the players follow suit, than the highest card wins. When then trick has several suits, then the following rule applies.

The highest card of the leading suit wins the trick.!
